COMOAA JROTC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The COMAA scholarship program began in 1995 with the primary purpose of recognizing the achievements and potential of graduating JROTC students, as well as help defraying some of the costs of going to college. Qualification standards were established and the first award of $500 was made in 1997. Since that time, 42 students have received $41,500 in scholarship award money. More than 85% of these students have used this money at an Oregon school. Currently, the program includes five high schools with JROTC programs including Mountain View, La Pine, Madras, Crook County, and Redmond.
Over the years the scholarship program has been supported by contributions from various sources. The program has received money from member estates, a member’s book sales, 50/50 drawings at monthly COMOAA meetings, and donations from many regular and auxiliary members.
The COMOAA Board decided to modify the program for 2012 on a trial basis. Scholarship money will be awarded based on available funds, and the students will all compete at the same time instead of earmarking one scholarship per school. COMOAA members participate in the scholarship interviews and presentation of awards.
Donations from members and the public are always welcome. Donation money is used to insure the program continues into the future. The scholarship program manager is Dave Blahnik.
